Our dear friend Steve Rysted passed away, RIP.
We provided hundreds of jobs and services over the years in Stage & Entertainment OKC Metro. We made it happen for countless Concerts, Broadways & Corporate shows. He was our Business Agent from 2006 to 2009 and President from 2010 to 2016. Thank you Steve for your kindness, customer service, leadership, & your willingness to listen to your assistant. Teaching and Presentation Techniques workshop is a free, two-day training that covers effective teaching techniques, learning styles, training design, and lesson planning. Ample time for practice is provided and participants will conduct a sample lesson on the second day. This workshop is a rigorous, information-packed, and rewarding two days designed to take IATSE workers who are experts in their craft that are or will be conducting skills or safety training at their local and teaches them education and training techniques to improve their presentation and sharpen their skills as teachers. You can read more about it here.The good news: the North American Free Trade Agreement is finally being renegotiated because America’s working people demanded it. Our hard work made clear that the original, failed NAFTA cannot continue.
The bad news: there’s still more work to do to fix NAFTA. America’s working families cannot support the revised NAFTA without additional changes to the text and supporting provisions in implementing legislation. This revised NAFTA needs fixing. Without better rules and swift and certain enforcement, Mexico’s workers will continue to face threats and violence when trying to join an independent union. Without a union and a contract, Mexico’s workers will continue to make wages of $2 per hour or less. If the new rules allow corporate CEOs to continue to close shop in the U.S. and move to Mexico in pursuit of low wages and weak labor and environmental standards, the renegotiation will have been a failure. And some of the revised deal’s rules are even worse than the current NAFTA, including monopoly rights for pharmaceutical corporations that will keep drug prices sky high and new rules that will undermine public interest protections, such as workplace safety. Rather than accepting that this is the best that the three countries can do, we’re urging the parties to go back to the table to fight for an ironclad agreement that working people can endorse and be proud of. Sean McGarvey, thank you for your leadership. It has been incredible to watch you bring such clear direction and laser focus to the building trades agenda. And, to my fellow Secretary-Treasurer, Brent Booker, thank you for your camaraderie and friendship in the trenches...as well as to ALL the Building Trades General Board of Presidents, for your vision and dedication to our movement. We are in good hands. I’m thrilled to be here today, and I bring greetings from the 12.5 million working people of the AFL-CIO, who are standing with me in spirit on this stage, fighting the fights and celebrating the victories alongside you.
